Informative. Easy. Delightful. These adjectives were the driving force behind the new design for CHI Franciscan’s internal weekly newsletter which had been steadily losing readership despite being a one-stop resource for important hospital and department news. A great digital experience should be exciting, inspiring, and put smiles on faces. My team and I developed a strategy and design approach aimed at simplifying phone and tablet interactions, and de-cluttering the overall visual presentation. The upgraded design exercises restraint both aesthetically and by giving managers, supervisors, and leadership staff more direct access to time-sensitive topics and the content they seek most. We also introduced strict rules governing headlines and featured stories which resulted in faster browsing times. Our design efforts were further aided by CHI’s rich and varied color palette, and the use of stylized photography which focuses on intimate interpersonal interactions. Together, these elements celebrate CHI’s diversity and express optimism for the future. The final component in this newsletter refresh was a set of custom icons designed specifically to support mobile navigation and identify content displayed across multiple categories.
